Meaning in English: This is said when somebody unexpectedly manages to break out of his conventional patterns. But this happens rarely usually. There's actually a similar German saying that says that you actually can't jump over your own shadow, which physically is also correct ;-) But in the figurative sense here, sometimes it does happen, usually in extreme situations, like when you have fallen in love or when you have gone through hell...
